Getting Started

The first screen of the program works just like the built in address book application. Choose new to select a new project. The tasks list operates similarly, with the new button opening up a details screen for the task.

The preferences selections will allow you to change the sort order of the tasks list and select items and columns to hide and show. The dynamic priority option instructs the application to automatically promote the priority of tasks based on the open and target completion dates.

Suggestions

TrackInHand was originally created for tracking software and development projects, but was designed to be flexible enough to use in other ways as well. Here are some suggestions:

1. Use the customizable categories for release information. We use it here for tracking what changes were made in or assigned to specific versions. By setting up categories for the version numbers, we can tell at a glance what our current status is for a target release of software.
2. If you are using it to keep track of specific people working on projects, use one of the Notes to list them. Starting with Version 1.2, this information is visible on the project details screen.

What Do I Need to Use TrackInHand?

You need a PDA running PalmOS version 3.0 or above and about 35K of space available for the application, plus some additional space for your data (another 50K will be enough for most people). PDAs that have PalmOS 3.0 or above include all devices made by Palm since the Palm III (1998), all devices from Handspring (including the Treo models), all devices from Sony, all of the Kyocera PalmOS Smart Phones, the TRG Pro, the Handera, all of the IBM Workpad series, the PalmOS based Symbol devices, and the PalmOS based Samsung phones. If you need a PDA or want to upgrade, we have a list of devices that we recommend.

There is no desktop component of TrackInHand at this time. There is something in development to allow you to print reports based on your data from a Windows desktop, but there is no expected release date for this component at this time.

Installing Your Software

To install TrackInHand on your PDA, follow these instructions:

1. Download the TrackInHand.zip file by clicking the "Free Trial!" button above or by clicking this link.
2. Save the file TrackInHand.zip to your desktop.
3. When the download is complete, you should be able to double click the zip file (or compressed folder, depending on your setup) to view the contents of the file.
4. Extract the contents to a temporary area on your desktop PC.
5. Launch the Palm (tm) Desktop software.
6. Click the Install button on the left side of the screen. A dialog box appears.
7. Click the Add button.
8. Choose TrackInHand.prc from the temporary location where you unzipped it.
9. Perform a HotSync® operation. When you perform a HotSync operation, TrackInHand is installed automatically. Check the applications menu on your handheld to confirm that the program has been added.
10. You should now be able to delete the contents of the temporary area on your desktop PC.

License & Registration

The unregistered version is not limited in any way. A periodic message will appear to remind you to register. A license must be purchased by using our Buy Now feature or from PalmGear.com or Handango.com within 30 days of your first use. To register the application, choose About from the menu and click the Register button. You will need to provide either the Palm User Name as it appears on this screen or the series of letters and numbers separated by colons for registration. If you provide this information at the time of purchase, an unlock key will be emailed to you. To view a copy of the license (also included in the download file), visit our License Page or you can send an email to brad@HandAble.com for more information. Future versions of the application can be directly installed without the need to re-register.

Updating Your Software

Registered users are entitled to free updates for the life of the product. To upgrade your version at any time, simply download the newest zip file (also at Handango.com or PalmGear.com) and install the prc file to your device, same as when you first installed the application. Do not delete the application from your device first or you will destroy your data!

v1.2 - 10/30/2001

*** Warning ***
When upgrading to Version 1.2 from an earlier version, when you run the application the first time, it will take a few moments to upgrade your databases. Depending on the size of your databases, this may take a few seconds or a few minutes. Do *not* reset your device during this process or you will corrupt your data. If you want to back up your data before upgrading, you will need to back up the following files from your desktop:

1. BugTrack-JTIt.pdb
2. Memos-JTIt.pdb
3. Any other .pdb file that begins with JTIt (there will be one for each project).

Enhancements

1. Added ability to copy the entire project with a new name (available on the menu when viewing the Tasks list for a project).
2. Added ability to move or copy a specific task to another project (available on the menu while viewing the details for the target task).
3. Description now also uses the memo ability, dramatically increasing the available space for the text.
4. Added the ability to change the reference number.

1. You can now export a task report to memopad - from the tasks list, choose "Export to Memopad" from the menu
2. Fixed problem with date formats - it now uses the Palm's preferences for date and time formats
3. On color enabled Palms, the task will now turn red if past target date
4. Problem solved when painting a table on Palm OS 2.0 devices
5. Project title now repaints when change
6. Bug fixed that caused incorrect items to be viewed when a change was made while looking at the task list by category
7. Fixed Autoshift bug when editing a task
8. Fixed bug that would scroll back to the top of the task list after looking at the details for a task
